Peterhof

The imperial summer residence in Peterhof is sometimes called Russian Versailles.

It was the idea of Peter the Great to create on board of the Gulf of Finland the palace and park with unique system of fountains, which are now famous all over the world. The project of the ensemble was partly made by the czar himself. 173 fountains, 4 cascades, numerous sculptures and charming pavilions all this make the essence of the ensemble.

It is impossible to forget the impressive view of the Maritime Canal - the main water avenue of Peterhof park, and the Grand Cascade with Samson fountain 22 meters high. Every part of the park, every fountain is original and unique.

Peterhof is interesting not only for its fountains, but for its palaces, too.

In Grand Palace one will see interiors of baroque and classical style. The mysterious Grotto, situated under the palace just near the Grand Cascade will give a new point of view on the Maritime Canal and give an idea of the construction of fountains' system.

Monplaisir with its elegant galleries and French windows was the favourite palace of Peter the Great, who lived there when he was coming to Peterhof.

Marli is situated in the Western part of the park, near the large pond, and is interesting by interiors and furniture of the 18th century.
