Penaty

If you have already visited the Hermitage, Peter & Paul Fortress, royal summer residences we can offer you a tour to the charming place in the north of Saint-Petersburg, near the Gulf of Finland: Penaty, the country house of an outstanding Russian painter Ilya Repin. A wooden house with steep glass roof stands in the middle of vast pine park. Ilya Repin lived here for 30 years, since 1903 till his death in 1930.

Named Penaty in honor of Roman household gods, penates, in the beginning of the 20th century Penaty became one of the centres of Russian cultural life.

Prominent Russian musicians, writers, painters visited Repin, lived and worked in his house. Shaliapin, Gorky, Stasov, Rakhmaninov, Kuprin, Bunin, Chukovsky - these are only several of Repin's guests. Every Wednesday night the house was open to everybody who wished to come here; the closest friends could come any day and time.

Everything in the house looks like in Repin's time: the artist's studio, a glazed verandah, a dining room with a revolving dining table which enabled guests to serve themselves
