The Russian museum houses the largest collection of Russian art since the 11th century to present time.

The museum was opened in 1898 in the former Michael's Palace, and its first exposition consisted of approximately 1500 items. Now there are about 400000 works of Russian painters and sculptors in the museum.

One of the most interesting departments of the museum is the department of Russian icons of the 12th - 17th centuries. Here you will see unique by its beauty and tenderness icon Angel the Golden Hair with large sad eyes; works of Theophan the Greek and Simon Ushakov. You will have an opportunity to compare the icons of Novgorod, Pskov, Moscow, observing the difference in colour plate, themes, lines' sharpness and mood.

In the department of Russian art of the end of the 19th 20th century you will admire masterpieces by Repin, Serov, Chagall, Malevich, Filonov, Petrov-Vodkin. You will see mysterious Vrubel's canvases; picturesque Eastern landscapes by the symbolist Roerich in unreal yellow-blue colours; Nesterov's religious paintings in soft pastel greenish colours; paintings by the members of The World of Art, an artistic group of the beginning of the 20th century.
