Alexander Nevsky Monastery is situated on the bank of the Neva river, at the end of Nevsky prospect.

It was founded by Peter the Great in 1710 and was given the name of Alexander Nevsky, the conqueror of Swedes and one of the city's Saints.

The project of the monastery was made by Domenico Trezzini, the author of the Twelve Colleges, Peter's Summer Palace, Peter & Paul Cathedral.

One can not only admirer the architecture of the Laura but attend orthodox service in St.Trinity Cathedral, situated on its territory.

Visitors are attracted most of all by the Artists' Necropolis situated in the Alexander Nevsky Laura. Opened in 1823, it became the burial place of Russian writers, painters, actors and musicians of the 19th 20th centuries.

One can see tombs of Dostoyevsky, Chaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakoff, Mussorgsky, Borodin, Glinka; of Russian painters Kuindji, Shishkin, Kramskoy, of the architect Voronikhin. Each tomb of the Artists' Necropolis is different and unique by its style, each one depicts most important traits of the artists' manner.
